About FocalPoint Focal Point is a club for anyone interested in photography. Level of expertise is not a requirement, interest is the key. The club has members of every level of experience. Focal Point was formed several years ago, and meets the third Tuesday of each month at the Northland Arboretum, located behind the Westgate Mall on 14250 Conservation Drive in Brainerd. We open our meetings at 6:00 p.m. with a half hour of social time. The business portion of the meeting starts at 6:30 discussing New and Old Business, followed by various presentations, demonstrations, and critiques. Dues are $12.00 per year with renewals in July. Club members organize several field trips, and attend seminars throughout the year. Short day trips to State Parks and various gardens are also popular activites scheduled by our members. In 2005 there were trips to the Lake Superior North Shore in January, June and again in the fall. Seminars given by Jim Brandenburg and Rick Sammon in Bloomington made for a weekend field trip attended by a group of FP members in November. A seminar given by Doug Beaseley in Mora, MN was another popular event. FP members started out 2006 with a weekend trip to Lake Superior's Bayfield area in Wisconsin. Early spring field trips included a morning at the Como Park Conservatory, and the Pulitzer Prize winning Exhibition at the Minnesota Historical Society in St. Paul. The Rocky Mountain School of Photography weekend was attended by six members of the club on April 8-9 in Minneapolis. PICTURING is an annual juried photographic exhibit sponsored by the Crossing Arts Alliance and promoted by Focal Point. Photographers from the area are encouraged to submit images for the event, and selected images are displayed during the month of March in the Q Gallery at Franklin Arts Center. The exhibit culminates with a day of events including workshops on various photography topics, a keynote speaker, and the presentation of the Photographer of the Year Award. An evening reception follows the workshops to honor the recipient of the of the award. The event is held at Franklin Arts Center in Brainerd. Each member of our club has the opportunity to have their own Gallery on the website, allowing them to display and share their images with other club members or anyone visiting the website.
